THE PHILADELPHIA AREA — Joe Biden, who claims to be more pro-union than any other president, will be attending Monday’s Tri-State Labour Day Parade in Philadelphia.

The Democratic president is talking on the recovery of the economy and the significance of unions in the United States after the devastating coronavirus pandemic.

“This Labour Day we’re celebrating jobs, good-paying jobs, jobs you can raise a family on, union jobs,” the president said to the gathering on Monday.

As he campaigns for reelection in 2024, Vice President Joe Biden is sure to stress the fact that the United States has gained employment and more individuals have started looking for work than at any time since January on Labour Day.

“As we head into Labour Day, we ought to take a step back and take note of the fact that America is now in one of the strongest job-creating periods in our history,” Biden said Friday from the Rose Garden, following the report that American employers added 187,000 jobs in August, indicating a slowing but still-resilient labour market despite the high interest rates imposed by the Federal Reserve.

The unemployment rate increased from 3.5% to 3.8%, according to a report released by the Labour Department on Friday. This is the highest figure since February 2022, but it is still historically low. But there is good news behind the increase in the rate: January saw the largest increase in job seekers (736,00), and not all of them found positions immediately once. Those who are not actively seeking employment are not included in the unemployment rate.

To quote Vice President Joe Biden: “People are coming off the sidelines, getting back to the workplace.”

Sheet Metal Workers, United Food and Commercial Workers, Stagehands, and other union members waited in the warm and muggy morning air in Philadelphia for the president to speak at the Tri-State Labour Day event.

Philadelphia resident Lenny Nutter, who was wearing a yellow Labourers International Union shirt, said he came to the event to show support for the President and that unions are more active now than they were in the past because of the President’s policies.

Nutter claimed that “unions are adding members and a lot more work has been given to union workers,” which is true.

Vice President Biden has authorised federal cash to assist union members’ pensions and has utilised administrative steps to encourage worker organising. The Biden administration just last week proposed a new regulation that would expand overtime pay eligibility to 3.6 million more American workers, the largest such increase in decades.

As part of the $1.1 trillion public works package enacted by Congress in 2021, Biden has also travelled the country to boast about the progress being made by union labour on projects like building bridges and improving train tunnels.

“Unions raise standards across the workforce and industries, pushing up wages and strengthening benefits for everyone,” Biden said on Friday. “As I’m sure you’ve heard me say before, Wall Street didn’t construct the United States. Middle-class families and unions worked together to construct the United States.

The Philadelphia AFL-CIO, whose website claims to represent more than 100 local labour unions and 150,000 workers, is hosting the 36th annual Tri-State Labour Day Parade and Family Celebration.
